Jo Wilburn

It occurred to me that it may be confusing to see posts entered here or on my social media platforms with differing artist names. Most songs say by JoDan Music, but some say by Jo Wilburn. Well, I thought I might just explain it to get rid of that confusion if it, in fact, exists.

I have about 16 songs released under the artist name Jo Wilburn that includes a theme album called Winds of Change (14 songs plus a tag that’s a minute and thirty-one seconds which I’m not sure should even count as a song.) I released it through CDBaby mainly to have a physical product to sell at gigs via reference through the CDBaby store. That was going well and then, not long after, the pandemic hit, the CDBaby Store closed, and I felt betrayed. Then, I got side-tracked by other projects, and I didn’t even claim my artist pages or try to market the sales or streaming of “Winds of Change.” At the time I felt like I couldn’t deal with the digital. So, not many people even knew about the release, and it sat there doing nothing. Now, I’m feeling remorse about the neglect, and trying to remedy that with some TLC.

The Winds of Change album has been referred to as a rock opera and the songs individually as rock, soft rock and progressive folk.

In the meantime, in 2024, Dan Wilburn (my husband) and I have started collaborating and releasing songs under the more inclusive artist name JoDan Music, since we both write and perform. We’ve been busy recording new songs, a task I love, and I’ve been learning how to navigate the digital market, a task I don’t love. The first song we released this year was a song I’d written, and we’d recorded previous to the JoDan Music distribution decision. That was “Along for the Ride,” and it is in the southern rock / country rock category. I released it under Jo Wilburn. The releases following the song “Along for the Ride” are released or will be released under JoDan Music.

So, whether there will be more songs released under the artist’s name Jo Wilburn, I don’t know, but I don’t want to ignore the songs that are there. I think they are actually quite good.

Have you ever felt you were just along for the ride, when you suddenly, or finally, realize that someone else is making your life decisions, controlling your life’s direction based on his or her dream with no consideration for yours?

That’s the singer’s position. She’s tired of it, tired of the passenger side. She’s taking her control back and choosing for herself which road she will travel. “Move it on over,” she says, “let me behind the wheel… I’m tired of going along for the ride.”

                                                    More about the song.

In the story album “Winds of Change” the singer/narrator takes you through the bell curve of a failed relationship, from initial attraction, falling in love, through good times to the nightmare of betrayal, making the hard decision, and finally to a new view of herself and a new beginning. We follow her as she transforms from an insecure high school girl who looks to her relationship to define her self worth to a woman who has learned to respect and trust herself. Winds of Change is an uplifting jouney of personal growth that listener’s share. Stories are available between the songs to add detail and a deeper understanding.

Ancient cultures thought of wind as the breath of God, divining change, bringing good fortune here, and disaster there, seemingly without reason.

We are blown about by these Winds of Change. We meet that special someone and love comes in like a cool refreshing breeze, soothing and gentle. At first, it seems nothing could go wrong, but sometime, somewhere along the line it does. Then love is like the raging wind as it screams past, smothering with the coldness of winter, hiding the breath of spring, sweeping away the illusions and knocking us down to the ground.

Then, as in the song, we ask ourselves: How did we get here from there?

Historically, women have grown up with the myths that the way for a woman to be happy is to find her knight in shining armor, her white knight. Someone will come along and rescue her, prove her worth by loving her perfectly, and She will be happy ever after.           In the song, the singer has met someone she thinks is that white knight. She knows she is  in love without considering just what love is. She looks outside herself for approval instead of looking within.
